Spring 2014 Trend Predictions

2014 has already begun, and so have the trend predictions for the year. In the last few seasons, we’ve seen pops of color, hints of vintage and retro design, and we’ve seen interesting combinations. 2014 has that much to offer –and much more.

1. Leather

Leather is making a comeback. Don’t worry: this isn’t Harley Davidson leather, and this isn’t your uncle’s beaded and fringed jacket. No, black and muted-tone leather is appearing on the runway in the form of pencil skirts and trouser-cut pants. In this outfit assembled byZara.com, this Peter Pan-collared sweater is paired with these leather trousers to bring a unique edge to the otherwise girl-next-door look. By the way, girls, you don’t have to feel bad about wearing this leather: all leather featured in this year’s fashion is vegan leather, like this skirt fromBlank NYC.

2. Leggings

Leggings popped back onto the fashion scene a few years ago, and they’re here to stay –with a twist. Some interesting trends in leggings include leather leggings (proving that vegan leather is making a big comeback this year), and leggings in interesting prints. In the past you might have wanted to play it safe with a dress and a pair of leggings in black or in muted colors, but now the trend is flipping: wear a muted colored-dress and let your leggings talk for themselves. Be creative. Maybe try these shark leggings fromModcloth with a blue or gray dress.

 3. Patchy Jeans

Do you remember in the 90’s when you could walk into any department store and buy jeans that seemed to be assembled by different cuts of cloth? Some were light and dark, a combination of 2 pairs of jeans, and some seemed to be one pair of jeans until the knees, and then the bottom leg of the pants were assembled by a patchwork of different jeans. After the 90’s, the jean trend included holes, but now we’re back to patches.Blank NYC has just begun taking pre-orders for this new trend in jeans, referred to as Spray On Shins, matching the contemporary skinny jean style with the 90’s patchwork look.

4. Big Frames

Go big or go home. In the last few seasons, we’ve seen glasses get bigger and bigger, proving that nerdy really is popular. But in 2014, glasses are getting even bigger. Tom Ford is one of many glasses designers that take an already large lens, wrap it with stunning black plastic, and make sure that black plastic has something, well, eye-catching about it. In women’s glasses, look for something that has a cat eye for a trendy vintage look akin to Audrey Hepburn. In men’s glasses, look for frames that are square. Or if you’re a man that doesn’t mind a fashion statement, try a pair of round frames in the vein of John Lennon or James Joyce.

5. Unstructured Pieces

It seems like hippie blouses will always come back. There’s a kind of freedom and youth inherent in crepe cloth with elastic waistbands and embroidered necklines, and it’s coming back. As always, contemporary designs try to take something old and make it new. This year, when you’re buying your hippie blouse, make sure that the embroidery is composed of bright colors, or if the embroidery features Southwestern-inspired design (as the trend was last year). Ladies, gentlemen’s fashion includes unstructured pieces, too:Details also displays tailored shirts that are loose-fitting and blousy.
